NUDSA successfully held a dental outreach at Smiles Community Centre, Soweto Kayole on 19th March 2022 in spirit of commemoration of this year’s World Oral Health Day. A total of 15 students were in attendance and were accompanied by Mr. Josephat Bii (Sai Pharmaceuticals).
Students used two cabs for transport in addition to the transportation offered by Sai Pharmaceuticals. We managed to do screening for 29 children, with ages ranging from 4 - 19 years old. Out of the 29, 17(58.6%) of the children screened had gingival and periodontal diseases, 11(29%) of the children had dental caries, and almost all of the children had fluorosis.
Oral hygiene instructions on brushing techniques, brushing frequency, toothbrush and toothpaste use were given to the children and their caregivers. Toothpaste samples from our partners and sponsors were then handed over to the caregivers. We also managed to have an interactive session that included singing, talks, and motivation.
The activity was sponsored by Dr. Marjorie Muasya (Chairperson Kenya Association of Paediatric Dentists (KAPD) and Lecturer University of Nairobi Dental School) and Mr. Michael & Mr. Josephat Bii (Sai Pharmaceutical). NUDSA would like to extend our appreciation to Dr. Muasya, Sai Pharmaceutical, the school, Smiles Community Centre, and our students.
We would like to make a request to our partners, Dental School – University of Nairobi, KAPD and any stakeholder to help with immediate intervention for the treatment of Shadrack Mutemi, Barbra, and Givens Mwangi. Their Caregiver is Mr. Peter +254722412676.
1. Full mouth scaling & polishing and oral prophylaxis and follow up of these children.
2. Restoration of carious lesions for the children.
3. Water de-fluoridation program to control water fluoride levels.
