Cleft Lip
The Oral and Maxillofacial Unit is conducting a series of seminars on management of craniofacial malformations in the months of November and December. The overall objective of the journal club series on craniofacial malformations is to provide high quality and compassionate care to children suffering from facial and mouth deformities. The participating maxillofacial surgeons are part of a nationwide team involved in cleft surgeries as part of communty service.
Dr. Kennedy Wesisi gave an engaging presentation on the cleft lip and palate malformation which was moderated by Dr. Tom Osundwa on the 14th of November 2022. Visiting maxillofacial surgeons from the Kenyatta National Hospital included Dr. Edwin Rono, Dr. Kennedy Koech and the unit head, Dr. Adeline Vilembwa. Dr Wesisi’s presentation examined various cases managed by the UON/KNH surgical teams and examined recent advances in cleft repair.
Surgical intervention has been known to save the lives of Kenyan infants who are subjected to neglect and/ or abandonment based on cultural superstitions about facial deformities. The sessions on craniofacial malformations will be further guided by Dr. Tom Osundwa who has extensive surgical experience with Smile Train Africa and is the published author of “A Practical Guide to Cleft Lip and Palate”. His international and regional expertise in cleft surgeries is well documented in the daily news.
