Professor David Wei Chong Ngeow, a Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon from the Universiti Malaya, visited the University of Nairobi, Department of Dental Sciences between Tuesday 18th April and Monday 1st May 2023. He gave several online guest lectures, in addition to conducting in-person consultations on dental research and publications. Prof Ngeow is a research collaborator in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, having published several peer-reviewed articles with Prof SW Guthua, Dr F Opondo and Dr K Sarna among others.
According to the information provided on dentistry in Malaysia, clinical practice and research in the field of oral health in Kenya and Malaysia have a remarkable level of similarity. Prof Ngeow shared his experiences in the management of a number of complications encountered in maxillofacial surgery, particularly in the Implantology sub-speciality which is currently gaining traction in Kenya. He conducted courtesy calls on University of Nairobi officials including Dr WA Odhiambo (Chair, Department of Dental Sciences); Prof E Wagaiyu (Associate Dean, Postgraduate Studies) and Prof G Osanjo (Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences). Prof Ngeow’s visit marked the beginning of discussions of the formalization of links between Universiti Malaya (Malaysia) and the University of Nairobi (Kenya).
