The University of Nairobi (UoN) School of Medicine of Dental Sciences was inspected by a team from the East Africa Community (EAC) on its suitability to offer training to dental students in the region.
After the inspection, the school was found to meet the requirements for training of dental students as provided in the EAC regional guidelines for inspection and recognition of medical schools and teaching hospitals in EAC partner states.
The inspection of the school was done on 5th March, 2020, and a report released a few days later.
The report indicates that the school’s graduates shall be eligible for reciprocal recognition within EAC partner states as set out in the Mutual Recognition Agreement.
The inspection was carried out to ascertain whether the dental school was operating in compliance with the set standards and guidelines as approved by the EAC partner states.
This was the 3rd time the school was being inspected by a team that composed of Chairpersons, CEOs/Registrars and Chairpersons of Education Committees of the EAC partner states, Medical and Dental Councils. Also present were representatives of the Commission for University Education (CUE) Kenya, Kenya Health Professions Oversight Authority (KHPOA) and staff of EAC Secretariat.
UoN Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama was represented at the event by Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs.
Prof. Ogeng’o assured the team of full implantation of the report’s recommendations, saying UoN will endeavor to fully comply with the set regulation.
His sentiments were also echoed by Prof. James Machoki, Principal College of Health Sciences and Dr. Regina Mutave, Dean School of Medicine.
The joint inspection team was led by Prof. Joel Okullo, Chairman Uganda Medical and Dental Council (UMDC).
