The Department of Dental Sciences held a successful Staff Appreciation Party at the department which was graced by the representative of Director General Health – Dr. K. Bartilol and the UoN DVC Academic Affairs – Prof. Julius A. Ogeng’o who was representing the Vice Chancellor.

COSMETIC SURGERY - CORRECTION OF FACIAL APPEARANCE BY MAXILLOFACIAL AND PLASTIC SURGEONS

There are several indications for maxillofacial and plastic surgeons to work as a multi-disciplinary team to correct the aesthetic appearance of a patient’s face as part of reconstructive surgery.  These conditions include complicated malformations such as the Tessier cleft and severe orthognahic deformities.  Dr.

DEPARTMENT OF DENTAL SCIENCES CHAIRMAN PAYS A VISIT TO THE TEMPLE UNIVERSITY KORNBERG SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY

The Chairman of the DDS paid a reciprocal visit to the Kornberg School of Dentistry, Temple University as part of promotion of collaboration and partnership between the two Schools. During the trip, Dr. Odhiambo made a stop over at the Greater New York Dental Meeting and had a rendezvous with the CEO of Henry Schein medical team on potential support to the Dental School.

GATAKA MEDICAL CAMP

The Department of Dental Sciences had a group of staff and students perform a free general dental checkup on Saturday the 26th of November 2022 at Gataka Shopping Center. This exercise was  initiated by Citam Karen with the Department's SDS@50 Community Service Committee getting a special invite. Dr. Eunice Kihara, a member of that committee, led the team from the Department. Their expertise was well received by the conveners and the community. The turnout was impressive and the team was well equipped to cater to all who turned up.

CRANIOFACIAL MALFORMATIONS – CLEFT LIP & PALATE

The Oral and Maxillofacial Unit is conducting a series of seminars on management of craniofacial malformations in the months of November and December.  The overall objective of the journal club series on craniofacial malformations is to provide high quality and compassionate care to children suffering from facial and mouth deformities.   The participating maxillofacial surgeons are part of a nationwide team involved in cleft surgeries as part of communty service. 

Dr. Osiro's CARTA Research Project Update

Dr Olivia Osiro is a recipient of a USD 50,000 CARTA re-entry grant to complete pending work from her PhD project which was titled ‘Development of a prototype for a restorative dental cement in Kenya’. The present work is titled ‘Development of low-cost glass ionomer cements for dental restorations’. She has recently attended a short research visit between August and November 2022 as an Honorary Lecturer at the Dental Physical Sciences Unit and Barts and the London School of Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London.

POST-SURGICAL PROSTHETIC TREATMENT (OMFS JOURNAL CLUB)

The unit of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology/Oral Medicine and Craniofacial Radiology holds a weekly Journal Club on clinical practice and advances in relevant topics.  Guest lecturers are frequently invited to share their experiences in health care.  On 7th November 2022, 36 participants who included members of academic staff, postgraduate students and interns held a discussion on “Outcomes of prosthetic rehabilitation in patients who have undergone surgery for cancers of the head and neck”.
