Overview
The Department of Dental Sciences has successfully trained dentists through the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree program.
Graduates are expected to be competent to meet the oral health needs of the population, be self motivated and ethical in their approach to patient management.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To equip the student with knowledge, skills and competencies in patient management.
2. To equip the student with knowledge, skills and critical thinking so as to enable them conduct ethical research.
3. To instill in the student integrity and professionalism in the management of patients and interaction with professional peers.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOME OF THE PROGRAMME
By the end of the programme, the learner shall be able to;
Understand the theoretical basis of oral diseases and conditions
Understand the management of oral diseases and conditions
Structure
The course leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery shall be full time for minimum period of not less than five (5) years and maximum period of not more than ten (10) academic years.
An academic year shall be 36 weeks and each course unit shall be 45 hours.
The degree program shall be by course work, clinical work, practical, seminars, tutorials, a research project and in some course units e-learning.
All courses for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S) program shall be compulsory except in cases of credit transfer as stipulated by the regulations of the school of Dental sciences which govern credit transfer as is stipulated in (section 4)
A candidate shall enroll for all course units covered in each year, except in special cases approved by Senate on recommendation of the School Board and College Academic Board.
In special circumstances, a student shall be discontinued on medical grounds if Senate shall find him/her unfit to qualify as a dental surgeon.
A candidate exceeding the prescribed maximum duration of the course without valid reason shall be discontinued.
Admission Requirements
Candidates for admission must satisfy the general University of Nairobi admission criteria of a mean grade C+ in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E). A minimum C+ Grade pass will be mandatory in each of the cluster subjects.
The cluster subjects for Bachelor of Dental Surgery in K.C.S.E are as follows:
- Biology.
- Chemistry.
- Physics or Mathematics.
- English or Kiswahili

In addition to (3.2) above, eligibility for consideration for admission into the Module II Degree Program in the School of Dental Sciences shall be governed by the following admission requirements, outlined under each catchment category:

Advanced level holders should have at least:-
Two principal level passes and one subsidiary in Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE), Grade 5 and above in International Baccalaureate (IB), three principal level passes in GCE or equivalent level of education in the following subjects:-
- Biology.
- Chemistry.
- Physics/Mathematics.
- General paper.
OR
Kenya Certificate of Education(KCE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum ‘O’ level division II Pass or C+ mean grade in KCSE in addition to three year diploma from a Medical Training Institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate in either of the following disciplines:
- Dental Technology,
- Dental Surgery Assistant,
- Dental Hygiene,
- Community Oral Health,
- Clinical Medicine,
- Laboratory Technology,
- Radiography,
- Pharmaceutical
- Technology, Nursing, or any other equivalent disciplines.
In addition applicants shall be expected to be working in the relevant field of their training at the time of application.
OR
Holders of Degrees in any of the Science subjects from the University of Nairobi or equivalent degrees from institutions recognized by Senate of the University of Nairobi.
International students from non-English speaking countries shall provide evidence of competence in English language by producing test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) certificate or its equivalent.
Careers
BDS graduates can take up careers as dentists in public or private health institutions, oral healthcare product managers in dentally allied manufacturing companies or teaching at universities and colleges.

NOTE: The above fees is applicable to both local and international students.
Exam Regulations
Regulations governing a Bachelors degree of the University of Nairobi shall apply.
University examinations shall comprise of written, practical, oral and/or clinical examinations where applicable and a research project.
The final University examination shall constitute 70% of total marks and the continuous assessment tests 30%. The pass mark for any course unit shall be 50%.
A candidate shall only be allowed to sit University examination after attending two thirds (2/3rds) of all the prescribed course units.
A candidate shall maintain a logbook for each clinical course unit and it shall be marked independently with a pass mark of 50%.
A candidate who fails the clinical component of the continuous assessment test in a course unit shall not be allowed to sit the final University examination.
In a course with a clinical/ practical component, a candidate shall only be allowed to sit the final University examination after fulfilling all the assigned clinical requirements in the course unit.
The Practical/Clinical component in the final University examination shall constitute 50% of the total marks.
A candidate who fails the continuous assessment test shall not be eligible for compensation in the failed course unit in the final university examinations.
The School Board of examiners shall at its discretion compensate candidate(s) who have achieved marginal failure marks of between 46% and 49%. Compensation shall be made by taking two marks from a related passed unit to make up for every failed mark to a maximum of eight (8) marks.
A candidate who fails the final examination in any course unit with a mark of 45% or less shall on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners and subject to approval by the Senate of the University of Nairobi be permitted to repeat in that course unit.
A candidate who fails to satisfy the School Board examiners in two or less course unit(s) shall, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners and subject to approval by the Senate of the University of Nairobi be permitted to sit for supplementary examination in that course unit(s) within three (3) months and not less than two (2) months.
A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in a supplementary examination shall, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and subject to approval by the Senate of the University of Nairobi, be required to repeat the failed course unit(s).
A candidate who fails to satisfy the School Board of Examiners in three or more course units shall on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners and subject to approval by the Senate of the University of Nairobi, repeat the failed course units.
No candidate shall be allowed to repeat any academic year more than once on academic grounds.
7.16 A candidate who presents himself/herself for the first time and fails with less than 30% in three or more course units shall on recommendation of Board of examiners and approval by Senate be discontinued from the program.
A candidate who fails to satisfy the School Board of Examiners in a supplementary in the failed course unit after repeating the year shall on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and subject to approval by the Senate of the University of Nairobi be discontinued from the degree program.
A candidate who repeats and fails to satisfy the examiners in three or more course unit(s) on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and subject to approval by the Senate of the University of Nairobi shall be discontinued from the degree course.
Special examinations shall be allowed when next ordinary examinations are offered.
A candidate shall be required to pass in all course units taken at each academic year before proceeding to the next academic year.
A candidate will be expected to carry out a research project and defend it. The project shall be marked independently with a pass mark of 50%.
A candidate who satisfies the examiners in the final year examinations or supplementary examinations in the final year shall, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners and approval of senate, be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery.
Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree shall not be classified. However, the performance in each course unit shall be graded as follows: -
i) 75%-100% - Distinction
ii) 65% -74% - Credit
iii) 50% - 64% - Pass
iv) 49% and Below - Fail
ELECTIVE TERM
The candidate shall not graduate without having undertaken an elective course unit in an approved institution for a period of not less than 12 weeks.
