MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY IN ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

Overview

BACKGROUND

The Master of Dental Surgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (MDS-OMFS), programme is intended to train oral health officers to master the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of oral and maxillofacial disease and related orofacial problems as well as a give sound scientific foundation to enable them teach undergraduate and postgraduate students and to carry out original research.  This will ensure the calibre of graduates who will sustain the discipline through practice, research and continuing education.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. To equip the student with knowledge, skills and competencies in patient management.
  2. To equip the student with knowledge, skills and critical thinking to enable them to conduct ethical research.
  3. To instil in the student integrity and professionalism in the management of patients and interaction with professional peers.

PHILOSOPHY

The Master of Dental Surgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (MDS-OMFS) programme is guided by the need to develop a Kenyan based programme that produces specialists that can provide leadership and stewardship in the provision of the best care in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery diseases management.

RATIONALE

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical specialty focusing on reconstructive surgery of the facefacial trauma surgery, the oral cavityhead and neckmouth, and jaws, as well as facial cosmetic surgery/facial plastic surgery including cleft lip and cleft palate surgery. The programme is very relevant in the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) as well as in the realisation of universal health coverage, one of Kenya’s Big 4 Agenda. It is noteworthy that this programme is in support of UNESCO’s Education 2030 framework work for Action (FFA) as well as its theme on Health, HIV and AIDS.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The Master of Dental Surgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery shall take a minimum of five and a maximum of ten academic years of full time training and shall consist of course work, clinical duties and original research work leading to a dissertation.  The research project will start in the second year and shall be examined in the final year.

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face-to-Face Mode

Lectures, seminars, discussions, tutorials, guided practical experiments and demonstrations. clinical work, clinical teachings and tutorials, practical demonstrations, teachings in skills laboratory, on-call duties, clinical case discussions, journal clubs, case reports, seminars, multimedia resources. Most of the learning will be participatory.

Blended Learning Mode

A combination of face-to-face and online learning approaches.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

  1. The admission regulations of the Masters Degree of the University of Nairobi shall apply.           
  2. The candidates shall be holders of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Nairobi or its equivalent from an institution approved by the University of Nairobi Senate.
  3. The applicants shall be registrable by the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists Board.
  4. The candidates shall have at least two years working experience in clinical dentistry one of which should have been post internship.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates of this program can take up careers as dentists in  public  or  private  health  institutions, oral  healthcare  product  managers  in  dentally allied manufacturing companies or teaching at universities and colleges. It also prepares learners for postgraduate studies. The program also imparts skills to graduates who may wish to venture out as entrepreneurs.

ATTACHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The department has over the years attached students in the UoN Dental Hospital and formed very strong collaborations with various public and private institutions where our students can go for attachemnt. Examination Regulations

Common regulations governing all masters programmes in the University of Nairobi shall apply.

Examination for each course shall be held at the end of the academic year in which the course is taught.

6.3       Each course shall be examined by continuous assessment test and a final examination

Each examination shall be graded out of 100 and the pass mark for each course shall be 50%.

The continuous assessment tests shall be based on written examinations, seminars, tutorials, clinical/practical, work assignments and viva voce examinations (where applicable) in the course of each  year, and shall constitute 40% of the total marks.

The final examination shall be based on written papers, clinical examination, practicals, and viva voce examinations (where applicable) and shall constitute 60% of the total marks.

In course units where clinical examinations are administered, the clinical examination shall carry 50% of the marks awarded while written examination and viva voce shall carry 40% and 10% of the marks respectively.  In course units where clinical examinations are not administered, written examination shall carry 80% and viva voce shall carry 20% of the marks awarded.  In course units where neither clinical examination nor viva voce are administered, written examination shall carry 100% of the marks awarded.

A candidate who fails in up to three subjects in part I examination, up to two subjects in part II  examination, and one subject in parts III and IV examinations shall, on the recommendation of the faculty board and approval by the Senate, be allowed to re-sit the failed papers at a time to be determined by the Faculty Board.  If the candidate attains a pass standard in the re-sit examinations, he/she will be deemed to have passed the respective university examination for the year.

A candidate who either fails the re-sat subject examination or is not permitted to re-sit the examination due to his/her failure in more subjects than allowed in 6.1.8 above shall on the recommendation of the Faculty Board and approval of the Senate, be allowed to retake the failed course(s).

The pass mark obtained after resit examination shall be recorded as fifty percent while after retake the full mark shall be recorded.

A candidate who fails in the second retake or re-sit or fails to complete the course within the prescribed time shall, on the recommendation of the Faculty board and approval by the senate be discontinued.
