Overview

BACKGROND

Periodontology is the speciality in dentistry which deals with the diseases of the supporting structures of the teeth. These diseases comprise a group of inflammatory conditions of the supporting tissues of the teeth and are caused by bacterial biofilm. Periodontal diseases are thus infectious in nature and are affected and modified by environmental, physical, social and host stresses. Periodontal disease is the most common oral disease affecting mankind.

Graduates of this programme shall be able to treat all forms of Periodontal diseases on a biologically rational basis. It is also expected that at the end of the training, the graduates shall have attained adequate knowledge to become team leaders and managers in their work places.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. To equip the student with knowledge, skills and competencies in patient management.
  2. To equip the student with knowledge, skills and critical thinking to enable them to conduct ethical research.
  3. To instil in the student integrity and professionalism in the management of patients and interaction with professional peers.

PHILOSOPHY

The Doctor of Philosophy in Dental Surgery programme is guided by the need to develop a Kenyan based programme that produces specialists that can provide leadership and stewardship in the provision of the best care in dental diseases management.

RATIONALE

Doctor of Philosophy in Dental Surgery is the speciality in dentistry that deals with the diseases of the supporting structures of teeth and their management including the development of dental implants sites as well as surgical placement of dental implants. Periodontal diseases destroy the supporting apparatus of the teeth and may ultimately lead to tooth loss. The 2015 Kenya National Oral Health survey reported a prevalence of gingivitis of 75.7% and ninety-eight per cent (98.1%) for children and adults respectively. Chronic periodontitis, which comprises a group of inflammatory conditions of the supporting tissues of teeth is caused by a bacterial biofilm and has been reported to affect 1-10% of the population.

Whereas these diseases are infectious in aetiology, they are affected and modified by environmental, physical, social and stressful conditions. Like most dental diseases and conditions, chronic periodontitis is largely preventable and specialised management may effectively reduce edentulousness among populations. The programme is very relevant in the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) as well as in the realisation of universal health coverage, one of Kenya’s Big 4 Agenda. It is noteworthy that this programme is in support of UNESCO’s Education 2030 framework work for Action (FFA) as well as its theme on Health, HIV and AIDS.

COURSE STRUCTURE

  1. The Doctor of Philosophy in Dental Surgery shall extend over a minimum period of three and a maximum period of six academic years of full time training.
  2. The course shall be in three parts: Part 1 will done in the first year, part 2 in the second year and part 3 in the third year.
  3. The Doctor of Philosophy in Dental Surgery shall consist of course work, clinical work, practicals, research project, tutorials, seminars and journal discussions. All the courses in the programmme shall be compulsory.
  4. The course shall aim to cover the following aspects: The scientific basis of periodontal care, the relationship of periodontal care to other dental disciplines, diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with advanced periodontal problems, clinical treatment and management.
  5. The first year shall comprise of coursework, clinical work, preparation of a research proposal for the thesis and first year examinations.
  6. The second year shall comprise of coursework, clinical work, research work for the thesis and second year examinations.

Third year shall comprise of coursework, clinical work, research project report writing, examinations and defense of the thesis.

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face-to-Face Mode

Lectures, seminars, discussions, tutorials, guided practical experiments and demonstrations. clinical work, clinical teachings and tutorials, practical demonstrations, teachings in skills laboratory, on-call duties, clinical case discussions, journal clubs, case reports, seminars, multimedia resources. Most of the learning will be participatory.

Blended Learning Mode

A combination of face-to-face and online learning approaches.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Admission Requirements

1.The common regulations for Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Nairobi shall apply.

2 The applicants eligible for admission into the program shall fulfil all the following conditions:

Holder of a Master of Medicine degree or

Holders of Master of Dental Surgery degree or

Holders of Master of Science in Anatomy or

  1. Holders of equivalent degrees from Universities recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
  2. Provide a certificate of proficiency in the use of the English language or evidence of having studied using the language.
  3. Pass an entry examination.

1.1.3 The curriculum is open for students had previously completed the intercalated Bachelor of Dental Surgery of the University of Nairobi and are enrolled in Master of Dental Surgery.

  1. Credit Transfer and Exemptions

1.2.1 A candidate may on the recommendation of the school Board and approval by Senate be allowed to transfer credits or seek exemption for up to one-third of the taught courses if the candidate had attained a similar programme in another institution recognized by the University of Nairobi.

1.2.2 Applicants seeking course transfer of credits or exemptions shall apply through the Chairman, Department of Dental Sciences and the Dean of the School of Medicine to the Director of the University of Nairobi Graduate School justifying the request and indicating course units and attach certificates, syllabus, transcripts or other relevant documents required by the Graduate school to support the application shall be considered only after the applicant has paid requisite fees.

1.2.3 Grades for the transferred courses shall be entered in the student’s transcript while the exempted courses shall be entered as “exempt”

1.2.4 Applicants will only be allowed to transfer units from accredited institutions and programmes.

 

  1. COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  2. Student Obligations

The student will be required to attend all scheduled teaching sessions, journal clubs and practical classes for undergraduate and master students.

  1. Lecturer and Tutor Obligations
  1. The lecturer shall facilitate learning and apply the most suitable methods for the course.
  2. The lecturer shall develop teaching and laboratory schedules and coordinate learning and examination of students in the stipulated areas of study.

 

  1. STUDENT ASSESSMENT POLICY/CRITERIA
  2. Mode of Assessment

Student assessment shall be both formative and summative comprising of:

  1. Continuous Assessment Tests
  2. Scheduled presentations
  3. End of term examinations
  4. End of year examinations
  5. Thesis examination
  1. Student Supervision

Students will be supervised by at least two provided university supervisors. They will provide quarterly supervised reports.

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Dental Sciences is committed to providing the students with opportunities to acquire, sharpen their knowledge and gain technical/practical skills to complement their studies in order to enhance their employability in line with the Kenya vision 2030. Attachment is provided to students from recognized learning institutions during their final year of year preceding the final year of study.  

ATTACHMENT ELIGIBILITY AND DURATION

The Department of Dental Sciences attachment program runs on a yearly basis and intakes are in the Month of JANUARY.

Only attachees from Government recognized Training Institutions shall be eligible for intake.

Attachment shall be undertaken only once during the course

THESIS EXAMINATION

The Common regulations governing submission and examinations of the Thesis in the University of Nairobi shall apply.

The thesis shall consist of an original research work of scientific relevance to   the speciality of Doctor of Philosophy in Dental Surgery.

After the defense, the candidate shall correct the thesis and submit it within a period of twelve weeks.

A candidate who fails in the thesis may present the thesis again within a period of six (6) months.

A candidate who fails in the thesis at the second resubmission shall, on the recommendation of the School Board and approval by the Senate, be discontinued.

SCHEDULE OF INTAKES
